    Hallo!

    Topic # 1
"Sixteen years on the streets and you can learn a lot. But all the wrong things, not the things you want to learn" (p. 122). Discuss this quotation from the novel and show how it applies to the lives of two or three boys.

    Topic # 2
Explain how expectations played a role in the lives of the Socs and the Greasers. How did external and internal expectations influence each group´s actions in the novel? Give examples.

    Topic # 3
"Outsiders are individuals who find themselves in some way on the outside of a particular group or society." Analyse the above quotation and discuss the attitude expressed in it with regard to the Greasers in general and Ponyboy Curtis in particular.

I think that the quotation applies exactly.

If you live in bad conditions like the Greaser’s in a bad area of a town and you are encircles from criminality, has no possibilities to go some wear where you are safe and in good society so you have no chances to learn some think that is good for you. Against yours sake you are confronted with a lot of wrong things and bad energy. The people who lives in a good society and has money, which helps or makes them easier to reach their aim in their live didn’t think about your problems or how hard your live is before they judge you because of your origin, your look and education. They didn’t like you with out the knowledge how you really are.

But if you try to run away form the criminality and learn things that you want you get no chances, because of the people who think you have nothing lost in their society and you become always criminal.

Also it is hard to run away form your area because of the gangs and the criminality. If you didn’t decide to a gang you can’t survive and if you enter a gang you must be criminal or you get it because of steal for food or things that you can sell for money and the gang wars. You are also interacted from the other gang members which maybe didn’t try to be something else than criminal. IT is also not so easy to leave your gang because there are strong bonds amongst all Greasers; they all feel like they are members of one big family. When something goes wrong with one of the members, the other ones promptly stand up for him and protect him. So it is a big circle which you can’t leave.

The best example in the novel is the life of the three brothers: Ponyboy Curtis, Sodapop and Darry. They three live alone in a house in very poor state of repair and their parents died in a car accident. Darry, the oldest of them and Sodapop had to break off the school to get jobs and earn money. If Darry had a chance he could be a good student and go to the college but now he must work very hard. Sodapop must help Darry to earn money and Ponyboy is able to pass the school without strive if he become a chance but the social unfairness makes it impossible. In this society plays the origin and your position a big role.

    Währe sehr dankbar.

I think that this quotation is absolutly right.

If you live in bad conditions or you're encircled from criminality and there are no possibilities to go somewhere to a safe place - like the Greaser’s in a bad area of a town - you have only a very little chance to learn something good.
Quite the contrary: you are confronted with a lot of "wrong" things and bad intensions.
People living in a good society and having money, often reach their aim of live but didn’t think about other problems than their own. Or how hard life can be. Better siuated people are often full of prejudices just because of your origin, your look and your education. They may have a wrong opinion of you without knowing it better.

But if you try to leave the criminality behind you and learn something "better" you often get no chance, because you have to become criminal because of you origin.

This means, if you are able to leave your are - because of the gangs and the criminality. If you are no gang-member you can hardly survive on the street and if you are you almost have to become criminal. You are also affected by the other gang members who maybe don’t try to be something else than criminal. Leaving your gang can be very very difficult because there are strong bonds amongst all Greasers, everybody feels as a member of one big family. When something went wrong with one of the members, the others promptly stand up for him and protect him. It's a vicious circle.

The best example in this novel is the life of the three brothers: Ponyboy Curtis, Sodapop and Darry (sind das nicht 4????). They live alone in a house in very poor state of repair and their both their parents died in a car accident. Darry, the oldest of them and Sodapop had to break off the school to get jobs and earn money. If Darry had a chance he could be a good student and could somewhen went to the college but now he has to work very hard. Noch ein paar (Stil)korrekturen meinerseits:

But if you try to leave criminality behind you and learn something "better" you often get no chance, because you have to become criminal because of your origin.

This means, if you are able to leave your are (hier fehlt was)- because of the gangs and the criminality. Insgesamt sind die Sätze für englische Verhältnisse zu lang und verschachtelt. (aber gut, das ist mein Stilempfinden... )
